A perfect location: Berlin’s open-air amphitheatre the “Waldbühne”, a clear, bright night: 7 July 2006, the scintillating voices of three opera superstars: Plácido Domingo, Anna Netrebko, and Rolando Villazón accompanied by the Orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and conducted by Marco Armiliato – altogether an unforgettable happening of magnitude captured on screen by the film director Frank Hof.

These three singers represent the recent triumph and the new acceptance of classical music in the world, and whereas Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón are consid- ered the new darlings (“dream couple”) of the opera world, Placido Domingo must be considered the reigning sovereign. The English newspaper, “The Guardian”, has con- sidered Placido Domingo to be "the greatest operatic artist of modern times" and indeed it is a thrill to listen to his tenor voice which oozes the same emotional warmth and power that made him famous over 30 years ago. His protégé, Rolando Villazón, is a charis- matic protagonist with seductive tones and Anna Netrebko, without a doubt currently the most sought after sopranist, enraptures her audience with the range of her voice and her natural charm.

Whether performing solo, in duet, or as a famous new trio, critics agreed that the three superstars shone brightly that evening (singing arias from Puccini, Bizet, Verdi, Lehar and Rossini among others and that the “Waldbühne” audience was enthralled and duly captivated.

More than 8 million viewers in Germany, Austria, Norway, France, Italy, Mexico, India and South America tuned in live or via delayed telecasts to the event - dubbed the biggest classical broadcast since The Three Tenors. Now DVD home viewers everywhere can revel in the concert.
