With the series ‘Cinema : Sound’ the Wiener Symphoniker are taking up their long tradition of film music, bringing each year a film music legend to Vienna to guide the orchestra through their soundscapes. On 20 May 2025, the celebrated Hollywood composer, conductor and pianist James Newton Howard conducted the Wiener Symphoniker for the first time.
James Newton Howard has created the soundtracks to blockbusters such as the ‘Hunger Games’ series, the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ series, ‘Maleficent’, ‘King Kong’ and ‘Pretty Woman’. His multiple collaborations with M. Night Shyamalan on films such as ‘The Sixth Sense’, ‘Signs’ and ‘The Village’ are particularly noteworthy. In total, Howard has scored more than 120 films and is the recipient of a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, and nine nominations for Academy Awards.
